It's officially Amaryllis Season! Amaryllis are one of Cultivars favorite winter cut flowers. They are known as the "art and soul of winter".
Amaryllis starts as a dormant bulb and grows into striking long stem flowers that transform daily. Amaryllis are one of the longest lasting cut flowers. Knowing proper care and handling of amaryllis cut flowers is essential in getting the most out of these extraordinary flowers.
Amaryllis stems are hollow and should be cut with a sharp knife rather than scissors. A smooth karate chop with a knife makes a nice clean cut.
It is not uncommon for a few stems to split during shipping. If a stem has split, the bud will still be amazing and will open fully. Cut the stem above the split and place in a short bud vase with water. Run a line of bud vases with short amaryllis stems down a dining room table for a beautiful presentation.
To keep the amaryllis stem strong, the vase and water should always be clean. A dirty vase causes bacterial growth in the stem, weakening it. If there are cracks in the hollow stem, place a stick in the stem to support the flowers.
